Garden Combos

Posted on July 21, 2026

Plant combinations create islands of beauty.

One of the joys of gardening is arranging combinations of plants to produce a beautiful effect that surpasses what each specimen could do alone, even in a large clump. I have to admit that I probably got started on this game a little late simply because I am such a daylily lover. But I soon learned that companion plantings and combinations of complementary daylilies add so much pizzazz to my gardens.

Since I tend to like the semi-wild look as opposed to the carefully manicured one anyway, many of my combinations happen at least partly by “accident.” Perhaps it was a wild thing that I noticed but benignly neglected to pull. Perhaps it was a volunteer foxglove or rudbeckia that was in a tolerably good spot and turned out better than I thought. Or maybe it was two colors planted deliberately for contrast. However it happens, garden combo’s are a delight.

A few examples

  • Pandora's Box

  • Cosmic Struggle daylily with native black-eyed Susans
  • Coleus and bright blue lobelia
  • An almost white daylily with yellow yarrow
  • Lavender daylilies and yellow black-eyed susans
  • traditional daylilies matched with a bright yellow one inherited from my grandmother.
  • Fence row of fun
