Men Who Misbehave…

Here is an excellent commentary on the sexual misbehavior of prominent men in our world and how they do not get enough negative publicity for it.   I could not agree more.   As a holiness movement pastor, I believe our culture needs to begin to honor those whose character is worth emulating.  It seems like immorality in media figures only garners them more publicity.  As long as this is the case, our chilidren will not understand how wrong and destructive their behavior is.

More on Camping’s failed May 21 Prediction

Harold Camping is the latest in a long line of would-be prophets who by virtue of cleverness or supposed special knowledge have thought themselves an exception to Jesus’ words in Matt. 24:36; only to be embarrassed and exposed as false prophets when the predicted day arrived.

Sadly, such predictions do not seem to have the desired effect either.  I think the preacher supposes that his date-setting will precipitate an immediate revival of religion.   But instead of causing secular people to flock to faith, it seems to give occasion for unbelievers to ridicule the whole idea of Jesus’ return.   They certainly are not led to repent and prepare for the day when Jesus will return.

But in spite of the adverse climate created by a preacher such as Camping, it is very important for believers to continue to affirm the Bible’s words regarding the central truth that Jesus will return.   Our job is to replace errant teaching that leads to confusion with clear teaching.  To that end, I am including a link to a sermon visual I wrote that gives a more orthodox exposition of Jesus’ second coming and how we should respond to that firm expectation.    As Paul put it, “We wait for the blessed hope — the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ” (Titus 2:13 NIV).  We do not know the date, but we are expecting his return.

I believe one of the key lessons in Scripture from the teaching about Jesus’ second coming is this.  Since He is returning, we are ultimately accountable to him for how we live.  So as we remind ourselves of the truth of his coming and watch for it, living in expectation of it, we desire more and more to live out our faith with diligence from day to day so that we do not need to be ashamed at his coming.

Is the idea of library becoming obsolete?

Yesterday, I was looking for a fact that I had used before concerning the early Greek documents of the Bible.  I walked from shelf to shelf in the library lining my office but did not see what I was looking for.  Mildly irritated that I could not find it quickly, I initiated a Google search and found information even more up-to-date than what I had been looking for in my library.  I stopped momentarily to reflect on what had just happened. It occurred to me that what was happening on my desk through the computer and the Internet was rendering my library, painstakingly collected over decades, obsolete.  I thought about the Greek and Hebrew references that I seldom use because I can access similar versions stored on my hard drive much more quickly.

Today, on the news, I read an article that may well report the trend that will be the stake in the heart of libraries like mine and maybe bigger ones too.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/43093477/ns/business-retail/

The news reported that Amazon is now selling more electronic books than physical books and this only four years after they started selling electronic books.  This means the transition from physical books that you hold to versions that you watch on the screen is accelerating more than we had imagined.

I stop to think a little about what this means. What will happen to the thousands of books that people like me have collected? Will no one want them– preferring instead electronic versions?  Will there be no bookshelves in houses–only screens? Will libraries become simply banks of computer servers rather than repositories of actual books? Certainly the transition that this marks is epochal.

Response to May 21 Second Coming Prediction

My wife has written a great response to the hullabaloo this week created by an elderly radio preacher who has predicted the coming of Christ this Saturday.  Personally, I’m always surprised at how much traction these types of predictions seem to get.  I think it reflects humankind’s inner fears of eventual accountability to God.  But as JoAnne points out, it also gives us opportunity to help others hear from us a more Biblical perspective.  I’m including the majority of her e-mail.

Hi Friends,

So did ya hear? According to an 89-yr.-old preacher, the rapture is supposed to happen Sat. May 21, around 6 p.m. My first reaction was, “Well, I guess that’s one day we know He’s NOT coming back.”

As you know, the Bible says, “No one knows about that day or hour… So you must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect Him: (Matt. 24:36-44). It also tells us to make the most of what time we have left, being good stewards of our opportunities (Luke 19:13, Phil. 4:5).

Guess what I just read in my devotional for May 18?! “Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity” (Col.4:5)  Talk about God’s timing – WE HAVE A GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY TODAY!

People are talking about this all over the Internet, Facebook, News, etc. We don’t want to be lumped in with those “Christian fanatics” who will look stupid on May 22. Therefore we must speak out – today thru Saturday – before the event.

    1. The fact that people are already talking about it opens a wide door of opportunity. We don’t need to bring up “religion” – just the daily news. They have questions – we have answers. How do they feel about the end of the world? Do they know where they’re going? Now’s our chance to talk about our certainty of going to heaven and how they can be sure as well. Talk about your own peace – they can’t argue with that.

    2. The point is, life is uncertain. Any one of us may leave this earth BEFORE May 21. We could drive out our driveway today and be involved in a fatal crash. We all need to be ready, and so do our neighbors who are “far from God” (as Bill Hybels would say).

Today is an opportunity to take a “Walk Across the Room” to Facebook friends, co-workers, the clerk at Wal-Mart.

Our doomsday friends are focused on Christ’s return, as we all should be. They’ve also done us a favor by opening the minds of America to listen to the real truth of the Gospel. And we get a chance to plant some seeds and harvest some fruit.

Blessed are those who remember the poor

http://www.christianpost.com/news/evangelicals-join-religious-left-to-defend-poor-against-budget-cuts-50014/

An alliance such as this on a given political issue is a powerful political force and is long overdue.   The Christian church is too often ignored by politicians because they are so divided.  When we can speak with a united voice, we cannot be scorned.

In addition, from what I read, I am in total agreement that the proposed budget cuts fall too heavily on the poor and not heavily enough upon the large corporations, military-industrial sector and wealthiest Americans.    The poor have no lawyers and lobbyists on the payroll to help them out.

Why all the fighting in America?

I have been saying what Jerry Newcombe writes in this article or a long time. He has his “head on straight” and sees clearly!   And he says it very well!

The Budget Cutting Debate

http://blog.sojo.net/2011/02/24/this-is-not-fiscal-conservatism-its-just-politics/

http://www.optimum.net/News/AP/Article?fmId=51779945

It is revealing to observe the budget cutting debates.   As Jim Wallis of Sojourners rightly affirms, “A budget is a moral document.”   So budget cutting reveals moral priorities.  Where leaders are willing to cut and where they are not willing to cut is indicative of what interests they are willing to sacrifice and what they are seeking to protect.

As a citizen and a pastor, I am very concerned about this process for many reasons.  Some are just common sense, some are very Scriptural, and some may be my own politics too.   I read a recent thought-provoking editorial by Jim Wallis of Sojourners.  For those of you who are looking for a Christian voice that is very concerned about the poor, this organization may be your choice. I am adding them to my blog roll.   After reading Jim’s comments, I decided to make some of my own budget debate observations.

Answering a call for clergy leadership

Letter writer, David C. Ashley, in today’s Post Standard opinion page decried a lack of obvious clergy leadership in changing the climate of political discourse in our country.   I have good news for him.   Just such a leadership move has been in the works for awhile and at this crucial time has just begun to be publicized http://www.christianpost.com/article/20100326/conservative-liberal-christians-vow-to-model-civility/.

This initiative is authored and signed by many prominent clergy of various denominational backgrounds.  It is called A Covenant for Civility: Come Let Us Reason Together.    It is inspiring to read and is very Biblically based.  If implemented, it would bring the Golden Rule back to American politics, something we haven’t seen since politicians discovered that slander via advertising works in election campaigns.    I have personally joined those signing this important document and encourage others to do so.  I found a signable copy and list of many of the chief signers at http://www.sojo.net/index.cfm?action=action.display&item=100308-civility-covenant.    I intend to honor it (I hope I already have been) as I blog and as I preach.

The DREAM ACT should have passed

I’m very sad that the DREAM Act was turned back.  Our nation has been known for hospitality to immigrants.  The least we can do is give hospitality to children of immigrants.  It is Biblical to treat strangers living among us as native-born (Lev. 19:34).
In the case of children of immigrants it cannot be a question of amnesty.  For it to be a question of amnesty, they have to have done something wrong, which they have not.
I am one conservative Republican who will be putting pressure on the new Congress to fix the current travesty of justice which the DREAM act would have started to address.
